1. No Poverty
The UN Sustainable Development Goal 1 is;
End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
The workshops and forums for the participants (students) were organized to solicit their input on the following;
- Understand whether or not the children and young people understood what poverty is.
- What they individually and collectively believed is the cause of poverty.
- Whether poverty is a security threat to the stability of a people.
- The effect of poverty of children, young people and women?
- Can poverty be eradicated?
- What solutions can they proffer to eradicate poverty?
- Their solutions under the microscope
- Did they know of the existence of the UN Sustainable Development Goal on poverty?
- Can their solutions be translated into a short creative film for competition?
Our findings
- The children and young people all understand and know what poverty is.
- Children and young people have a very deep and disturbing belief of the causes of poverty.
- Poverty is a threat to security and stability of a nation.
- The effect of poverty on children, young people and women is dehumanising leading to all manner of vices; child trafficking, child prostitution, child labour, loss of self-esteem, loss of confidence and many others.
- The children and young people are divided sharply between those who believe poverty can be eradicated and those who don’t believe so.
- The two (2) divided opinions in point 5 above all proferred various solution towards eradication of poverty. A few of them however believed nothing can be done to eradicate poverty.
- They became better enlightened when we examined the proffered solutions.
- Majority of the children and young people did not know about the UN, let alone the UN Sustainable Goals.
- Yes their solutions can be translated into a short creative film for competition and they cannot wait for the start of that competition.
This workshop was held in all the six (6) regions of Ghana. In all, eleven (11) trainers of trainers, seventy-three (73) trainers and over
four thousand (4,000) students attended the workshops.
